I visited the Coachella Valley for the first time this weekend and although we didn't have tickets to the Coachella music festival, we watched it and could hear it traveling through the desert air to where we were staying to soak up a bit of sun for a few days. Highlights of the festival for me were Future Islands, the Head and the Heart, Beck jamming with his son, and Chromeo (who we danced our faces off to at the Showbox last week). Flying into the Palm Desert area was like viewing a map of the southwest, with rectilinear islands of buildings and green settled into a tan, barren landscape. On the edges of the golf courses and neighborhoods succulents, sage bushes and other desert plants made homes for a surprising variety of wildlife including hummingbirds, lizards, quail, roadrunners, bunnies (a perfect sight to see Easter weekend), bats, owls, and coyotes. The mountains made a dramatic background to our weekend and it was a perfect antidote to our wildly uncertain weather back in the Northwest.
